How To: MES on a Macbook M1 or Linux

Post by ambor » 25 Jul 2023, 09:04

I've managed to get MES working on an M1 Macbook and it runs great. This might be a good pathway for Linux users as well. Totally legal from the MS perspective and no Windows licence required.

Basically you have to install either Crossover (https://www.codeweavers.com/crossover) or Wine (https://www.winehq.org/)
  • You then create a "bottle" (a simulated Windows environment) - select Win10.
  • Then install MES
  • Then install .NET Framework 3.5 (there is an automated process to do this in Crossover)
  • Then configure the USB port to appear as a COM port (see instructions here: https://www.codeweavers.com/support/wiki/mac/mactutorial/usbtoserial2)
  • Then Load MES!
Something I didn't test is whether this works with WiFi or Bluetooth dongles. I don't have one to test with... but would be cool if someone out there can test and respond in the comments.
