Fiat Ducato - cannot connect to any modules

Post by bazmonaut » 02 Nov 2021, 14:07

So... I have successfully tested my OBDLink interface but cannot connect to ANY module. Vehicle is a 2012 UK Ducato.

I am trying to resolve an issue with my automatic gearbox, which will not go into gear when the engine is running (but will when it is not running...).

This same issue happened a couple of months ago, and the garage said they fixed it by clearing error codes and resetting the gearbox parameters. I can see what I need to do in 'simulation' mode in the module.

Problem is I cannot connect to any of the modules. I suspect I have a CANBUS issue. When I try to connect to ANY module I get the 'no response from module' error.

Seeking some advice on next steps?

My interface is via a OBDLink adapter. I have pulled it apart and it seems good quality and genuine, not a copy. I have used the test function in MES and all was well. I have also used the F12 'Scan DTC' function successfully.

After the first scan, I saw the following... note the CANBUS issues:

This is probably not your problem but when I use OBDLINK SX (USB) with my tablet PC that only has a mini USB-To-Go socket then I have to use a powered USB hub otherwise the OBDLINK SX does not function properly. Not sure why this is the case as ELM is ok. Probably because the OBDLINK interface has opto isolators and required GOOD power from both the vehicles OBDII socket AND the PC and USB-To-Go can not provide the necessary power for reliable working.

So I have managed to fix the gearbox issue by cleaning and drying the electrical connectors behind the passenger side headlight. This has resulted in the CAN errors on the gearbox going away.

But I still can't connect to any modules.

This may or may not be related but I am also trying to connect a cruise control which needs to be spliced into the CANbus high and low lines - this device is refusing to initialise because it is not getting a CANbus signal. I was advised that high and low are positions 14 and 6 on the OBD port, but when I look at the Ducato wiring diagram it has high and low on 2 and 10 (see table below).

I have tested my connections for continuity and also completely disconnected the cruise control thinking it may be part of the problem. Still can't connect to any of the modules via MES.

Any suggestions?

OBD pinout from my Ducato workshop manual:

1 diagnosis of line K . ABS - ESP
2 C - CAN H
3 diagnosis of line K
4 earth
5 earth
6 B - CAN B
7 engine ECU . ISO bus line K
8 unused
9 diagnosis of line K
10 C - CAN L
11 unused
12 diagnosis of line K
13 diagnosis of line K
14 B - CAN A
15 unused
16 battery +

Bumping.

My gearbox issue is back, and I still can't connect to any modules - including the gearbox module.

Could the issue be with the OBDLink connector I am using? Can anyone suggest an alternative connector?
