No ecu response on Alfa V6

Some assistance would be appreciated.
I have a 2002 3.0 alfa spider and 5 days ago I could scan dtc’s and pick up 3 fault codes and clear them but I could not connect and view live data. I am now unable to scan for dtc’s and I get the same error message when I retry and connect to the ecu.
I’m using the correct leads sold specifically for multiecuscan.
What confuses me is a friends generic code reader can connect to the ecu and view the error codes and can see live data.
Any guidance would be appreciated
