Punto 1999-2000 CAN doesn't work (edit: problem resolved)

Post by muchenz » 21 Feb 2011, 18:57

In Punto 1999-2000 CAN connecting doesn't work (electric steering and body)(punto has one lambda). In "SUPPORTED VEHICLES/SYSTEMS" is writted that Punto'99 is worked but it isn't. So please, do you can repaired it?? Or you can't repair it you should change Punto'99 to Punto'01 when it's implemented OBD2.

Sincerely, pozdr, muchenz

I forgot to mention my interface I use. It's ELM 327. It's probably made in China, I guess, but isn't mater, I hope.

The problem is probably in the ELM interface.

Thank you for the quick answer. But I think this isn't it. This's mainly apply to Stilo. For example, there is big thread about ELM: http://autokacik.pl/showflat.php?Cat=0& ... t=all&vc=1.

I'm able to connect to Punto at Elm only to ECU (with some error (pin code on something)). Steering and body is not connected.

You let to try your soft with ELM on real 99' 00' punto with one lambda to connect to body.It shouldn't go right.

Geeting, you

The CAN network on Punto '99 '00 '01 '02.. is all the same.
As I wrote above - the problem is in your interface. This ELM 'problem" does not apply only to Stilo. It applies to all Fiat/Alfa/Lancia vehicles with CAN network.
Did you test your interface on another vehicle? Did you try to connect to your vehicle with another interface?

I didn't try to connect another punto but I'll do it. I'll also modify ELM interfase as you suggested. But look this http://www.fiatforum.com/punto/190606-o ... punto.html :
Hello fellas! Greetings from Portugal!

I own two Puntos, one MK2 S from 2001, and one MK2 HLX from 2000.

I also own one of those ELM327 USB scanners, which I have tested, works fine on my MK2 S.

Now the problem is, I tried to use the ELM327 on the 2000-reg HLX, and it always gives error... The Punto has an OBD2 port, so I'm wondering wether it does really use an OBD2 compatible protocol... The ECU light on my dash is red, and I reckon it should be yellow (it is yellow on the MK2 S). Does this mean my car is not compatible with OBD2? Or must I use a specific reader?

Cheers fellas!
aswer:

As you can see, theory about ELM and punto from '99 to '00 is not only mine :D.

How do you explain that I can connect to ECU(with error) but I can't to body?? If interface is wrong I shouldn't connect to ECU, should I??

Well, I hate wasting time to explain the same thing over and over again in different topics.
The engine ECU is NOT on the CAN network. It uses KWP2000 communication protocol. You can connect to the engine ECU even if your ELM interface cannot connect to CAN network. The EPS, Body Computer and Dasboard are on the CAN network and you need a proper CAN connection in order to connect to any of these modules.
It is a very common problem with the ELM interfaces and that's why I pointed you to that topic.

The link you gave in fiatforum.com is about something COMPLETELY different. The guy is using a generic OBDII software to connect to his car. He is right that those earlier Puntos do not support the OBDII functions and his software cannot connect to them.
Multiecuscan uses manufacturer specific diagnostic functions which are completely different than OBDII.

OK, allright, you right :) .

I removed resistor between CAN + and - and interface's worked :D :D . I suggest don't add two resistors and capacitors because it might generate some another problem (it described in above autokacik.pl thread, unfortunately only in Polish).

Thanks a lot for help :D.
